CrockPot Cream of Asparagus Soup

Image
Day 184. I took the kids to a little zoo and amusement park last week with my friend Jennifer, and her baby, Max. Jennifer went on and on and on and then on some more about cream of asparagus soup. She had some as a starter in a restaurant and was really impressed, and asked if I could try to make it in the crockpot. So I did. There are two versions---one with cream and one without. The without cream is just as creamy, but doesnt leave a velvety film on your tongue the way the other one does. And the color is more forest-green than asparagusish. The Ingredients. --1 1/2 pounds fresh asparagus (although Id imagine frozen would work just fine) --4 cups vegetable broth --1/2 white onion, chopped --2 tiny red potatoes (or one med. brown) --1 t black pepper (please dont use this much. it was a mistake.) --1/2 t seasoned salt --1/2 cup half and half (optional; to add at the end of cooking time) The Directions. Wash and trim the woody ends off of the asparagus, and feed to the g...

A Feast For The Eyes A Glass of Emerald

Sometimes, looking is enough.   And, sometimes, you just have to give in to temptation. Friday Food Porn One of my latest haunts on the web is a relatively new site called Golubka. Its a mother-daughter collaboration covering good food, clever design, and some things in between. The "in between" would be photographs – lots of them – that make me want to jump up off my chair and dive right into the computer screen. Case in point: this gorgeous glass of greeeeeeeen smoothie. Twenty-month-old Paloma drinks them twice a day. { Id like to gnaw on Palomas sweet cheeks twice a day. Such a cutie! } Paloma likes lots of her mamas sexy raw vegan recipes. I betcha you will too once you get a taste. Live a little. Its the weekend.

What’s the Opposite of Inflammation

Image
I want to commemorate the writing of my 100th article on Blogspot by discussing a new insight into inflammation. I have been searching the last several years for an anti-inflammatory system to balance inflammation. Now I realize that there is no opposite to inflammation. There is only completion of inflammation to return to the original state. Inflammation is a process that includes resolution or recovery from the defensive, destructive state of immunological activity. Inflammation is the martialling of resources for battle by offloading lymphocytes from the blood stream, engaging the enemy b y triggering the release of toxic secretory vesicles from leukocytes, and cleaning up the carnage by macrophages engulfing cellular fragments. Each step in the inflammatory process induces the next step until there is a return to the origin. Inflammation is not balanced by anti-inflammatory processes. Inflammation is triggered by molecules characteristic of viruses, bacteria or fungi bindin...

Diabetic Hypertension Browning of the Arteries

Image
...View all 190 posts... I decorated a flan with a drizzle of honey, and my torch produced a toasted spiral.   That was just fructose plus proteins, with a little heat, to produce advanced glycation end products (AGE) that are brown.   If you prefer, you can do the same reaction with egg whites and sugar in meringues, or by grilling brined pork chops basted with honey and anchovy paste.   Fructose is 10X better than other sugars at producing glycation, AGE and browning. AGE and Arteries Why do we care about the Maillard reaction and advanced glycation end products (AGEs)?  Of course, understanding the biochemistry of cooking is inherently satisfying and it helps to explain why Dr. House used vinegar to stop meatballs from browning too fast in his cooking class, but it also explains what’s cooking in atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease.  It turns out that AGEs are highly inflammatory and inflammation of arteries leads to plaque formation.  [LDL is less i...

December Word of the Month Believe

Image
The word of the month for December is BELIEVE. Yes, I know it’s a little Polar Express, but I feel with the joy, anticipation, and stress that the Holiday season brings it’s a great word for reflection.  Overall, my focus this month will be to believe in the good in myself and in others and to trust that through this process I will be able to open doors and create possibilities that may otherwise not be there. In relation to class, I am going to believe in the power of my body, which is so smart. I am stronger than I think and each day I can achieve better alignment, get deeper in a position or hold a pose a little longer.  For my kids I will try to instill the belief in the magic of the season. This doesn’t necessarily mean in Santa Claus (although I do hope I have another year or two with this for my youngest, Damian) but in love, generosity, hope and the importance of family and friends-which is what this season is truly about. I know that children believe what they see us ...

8 Tips to get the Most out of Your TDM Practice

Image
1. Come hydrated and fill up your water bottle before class. It’s good for your muscles... and it sucks if you have to miss part of barre stretch to go get water! 2. Find the spot in the room that will set you up for success. If you’re newer to class try to be upfront or near the mirror so can use it to self correct. If you’re hard of hearing then place yourself closer to the speaker. If you’re sensitive to loud music move away from the speaker. Also important - if you have a chatty friend in class separate yourselves so you won’t distract each other! 3. Get there early. There is nothing worse than being rushed. By getting there a few minutes early you will have the time to transition from mom or work mode into workout mode. It also gives you a better opportunity to get your favorite spot in the room. 4. Set an intention for the class. What is it that you want to get out of class today? Maybe you are sore and really want to focus deeply on the stretches or you need some stress rele...

Leftover Chicken Salad with Mustard Hearts of Palm and Olives Paleo Low Carb Gluten Free

Image
Use leftover grilled or rotisserie chicken to make this Leftover Chicken Salad with Mustard, Hearts of Palm, and Olives. When it's summer, grilled chicken breasts are always on the menu at my house.  And if I'm going to take the time to prep the chicken, marinate it, and then grill it, I'm probably going to make extra grilled chicken for leftovers.  I already have 20 Summers Salads to Make with Leftover Chicken, but that doesn't stop my brain from coming up with more ideas.  Not long ago I made Rosemary Mustard Grilled Chicken for a big family party, and with some of the leftover chicken I made this Leftover Chicken Salad with Mustard, Hearts of Palm, and Olives .  Not only was this a delicious low-carb salad, but if you choose ingredients carefully it's Paleo, Whole 30 approved, and gluten-free.  If grilled chicken isn't on the menu at your house, this would also be delicious with leftover rotisserie chicken, the ones that jump into your basket when you're ...

Enjoy The Harvest Of The Season

As the Sun enters the sign of Libra, day and night are again in perfect balance. Temperatures begin to drop, leaves begin to fall, and once again, the element of Change moves into our lives. In truth, change is the one constant in the Universe that we can rely on. Around the time of the Summer Solstice, I set an intention to change my relationship to food. And oh, what changes have ensued. Transitioning to a raw foods lifestyle has had a significant effect on me physically. My body has let go of roughly 50 pounds; chronic heartburn, fatigue, headaches, and joint pain have vanished. Perhaps more significant than my bodys physical changes, are the internal changes taking place. Heres a bit of what Ive learned about myself: Certain foods trigger the phenomenon of craving for me. Before, my foods came in bags, boxes and cans. My three basic food groups were refined sugar, refined flour and trans fats. Foods falling into those three groups trigger a physical craving for me. I want more, m...

Visions Of Sugar Plums

Image
The Nutcracker has long been a Christmas season tradition, from elementary school productions to the famed New York City Ballet. Unless youre the Grinchs cousin, I bet you recognize Tchaikovskys Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy when you hear it. But few people, despite any visions dancing through their heads, know what sugar plums are or what they taste like. And I hate to break it to you, but plums aren’t necessarily involved. Although recipes are as varied as The Nutcracker productions, sugar plums have always been a combination of available fruits, nuts and honey. In fact, they were the favored confection of such historic figures as King Ferdinand, Queen Isabella and Benjamin Franklin. The best part? They are soooo simple to make and theyre raw. Yup, no baking required. There’s plenty of room for improvisation. While apricots, raisins and dates are common ingredients, any mix of dried fruits – including plums – works well. Enjoy this tasty treat! Holiday Sugar Plums 1 C chopped pec...

Types of Fat

Image
Unsaturated fats, specifically mono-and polyunsaturated fats, are often referred to as “good” fats because they have a positive effect on cardiovascular health. These fats are typically liquid at room temperature. Monounsaturated fats can be found in some oils, such as canola and olive, and foods such as avocadoes, olives, and nuts. Polyunsaturated fats can be found in oils such as flaxseed and safflower, and from foods such as fish, walnuts, and flax products. The majority of your fat intake should come from mono-and polyunsaturated fats. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are “essential” polyunsaturated fats, meaning your body cannot make them and they must be consumed through the diet. These essential fatty acids serve many important functions including blood pressure control, assisting in blood clot formation, regulation of blood lipids, and lessening the inflammatory response to injury and injection. They are also essential for normal growth and vision in infants and children. Satura...
