Healthy Living Raw Food Cleanse

I hope you enjoyed your holidays and have embraced the New Year and New Decade with gusto. Thus far, my 2010 has been spent shoveling snow. Lots of snow. Too much snow. The white stuff began flying on New Years Day and basically hasnt stopped. It now reaches the window sills on my little cottage. Of course, my Siberian husky Maya thinks she has died and gone to heaven. Im getting a heck of a cardio workout, several times a day. In addition to shoveling, Maya makes certain Im out hiking. I let her forge the way, cutting a trail through the woods. And let me tell you, traipsing through deep snow really gets your blood pumping. Im tempted to pop on a pair of skis and let her pull me, but then I flash back on our rollerblading adventures of summer and decide maybe its not such a good idea after all. Ive also been juicing up a storm with the sexy new Hurom Slow Juicer that Santa brought me. In fact, Ive consumed virtually nothing but fresh juices for the past five days. I really hadnt pla...

Raw Zucchini Salad Zucchini Carpaccio with Lemon Herbs and Goat Cheese Low Carb Gluten Free

Image
Use small fresh-from the garden zucchini to make Raw Zucchini Salad with Lemon, Herbs, and Goat Cheese. (For Phase One Fridays I feature Phase One Recipes from the past that have been my personal favorites.  I've been seeing small perfect zucchini at the farmer's market for the last two weeks now, so it seems like a perfect time to make this Raw Zucchini Salad with Lemon, Herbs, and Goat Cheese .) Zucchini Carpaccio is a dish I've been intrigued by since I first heard about the idea of thinly slicing zucchini and then marinating it in a dressing of olive oil and lemon juice, so I have no idea why it's taken me so long to try it. It was the Carpaccio of Raw Zucchini from Sidewalk Shoes that finally pushed this dish to the top of my list. Pam used a recipe from Tyler Florence, but I ended up making my own version, heavy on lemon and herbs, and with the addition of a little goat cheese, since I'm always in favor of goat cheese in a salad! New Years Resolution 1 Eat More Raw Food How Raw Foods Can Alter Bad Genes

Image
Raw fruits, berries and vegetables can mitigate bad genes Follow Foods For Long Life on FACEBOOK ! The Power of Food      One of my strongest beliefs about food appears in my quote on the right hand side of this page.      " Health, excellent or ill, is passed to our children not just through our genes but primarily through our recipes".      People often live in fear of getting a disease that their parents have. I know so many people who had one or more parents die from a heart attack, or some other disease, and they are unconsciously waiting for the same thing to happen to them. You dont have to do that. You can take control of your destiny and fight back with a healthful diet.       Most of the illnesses you fear that your parents are passing to you (and the ones their parents gave to them) were passed in the form of dietary traditions. If you ever get a heart attack, it could be from Moms 3 meat stromboli recipe that ...

Raw Nutiva Protein Powder Great For Smoothies!

Image
I like their environmentally friendly packaging option. A Great Addition for Smoothies Now that the weather is finally warming up, I start almost every day with a raw smoothie. For me, it becomes a chemistry experiment, adding a little flaxseed oil for omega 3, a little VitaMineral Green , fresh or frozen raw fruits, a handful of greens, some organic hemp or soymilk (or raw nut milk), topping it off with the contents of a calcium/magnesium capsule. I recently came across an organic, raw protein powder by Nutiva . They have two kinds. One is Hemp Protein with Fiber (with a profile of 37% protein, 43% fiber and 10% healthy fats including omega 3, 6 and 9). The other product is Hemp Protein 50% (with 50% protein, only 20% fiber and 11% fat). I find that by adding a few tablespoons of this protein to a smoothie, I’m pretty satisfied until lunchtime. It also is a perfect thickening agent and makes any smoothie thick and creamy. Hemp protein contains 66% edestin, a highly digestible bioacti...

Pear and Blueberry Salad with Raw Goat Feta Hemp Seeds and Apple Cider Vinaigrette

Image
Eat Lots of Colors You only have to look at your dinner plate to see the how nutrition your meal is. Phytochemicals, or beneficial plant chemicals, come in all different colors. This colorful salad is bursting with color and nutrition. You should opt for eating as many colors as you can each day and no, multi-colored MMs dont count. Hemp Seeds Im a big fan of hemp seeds and hemp seed products. They are high in omega 3 fatty acid and they are also a great source of high quality protein. Add them to your salads, over your morning bowl of fruit or hot cereal or anywhere you would use healthy seeds. I like the Nutiva brand. They are non-GMO certified and offer raw, organic product. To learn more about hemp read, " Hemp Horizons: The Comeback of the Worlds Most Promising Plant ". Rich in Essential Fatty Acids The salad gets its high content of omega 3 from both the hemp seeds and the flaxseed oil. Each serving provides over 2 grams each of omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acid...

Raw Apple Pear and Fig Green Smoothie A High Fiber Breakfast or Snack

Image
Fiber - Why its Important I recently had a discussion with a woman who was complaining of severe and chronic constipation. She asked me what to do. When discussing her diet, she admitted that bread, pasta and desserts, all made with processed white flour, are her weakness. Now I know that this isn’t an appetizing topic, especially when you probably came here around mealtime looking for a delicious recipe, but the fact is most Americans eat far less than the recommended 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day. Fiber is extremely important in preventing constipation. It’s no wonder that this is an extremely common condition. Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds can give you the fiber you need. Eating a diet high in meat and processed grains will leave you falling way short. Meat has zero fiber since fiber only comes from plants. A slice of white bread only has 1 gram because processing the grain removes the fiber-rich bran. A raw pear, on the other ha...

Raw Vegan Gluten Free Blueberry Cream Tart In A Chocolate Coconut Crust Perfect For Valentines Day!

Image
This blueberry tart makes a perfect Valentines day dessert! Follow Foods For Long Life on FACEBOOK . Blueberries and Chocolate I know, its almost Valentines day. I should be making something red, like chocolate covered strawberries or red velvet cupcakes. But I was inspired by the thought of whipping fresh blueberries and cashews into a creamy filling served in a simple raw crust made from heart healthy English walnuts, dried coconut and chocolate in its purest form - raw cacao. Is there a better way to say, "I love you" than giving a gift of delicious and powerful antioxidants? I dont think so. Elegant or Casual? This recipe makes enough for one 4 1/2 inch tart pan with enough crumble and filling left over for 2 small ramekins. A tart makes a very elegant presentation. But if you dont have a tart pan, feel free to use individual ramekins or small bowls for the entire recipe. Sprinkle the crust ingredients in the bottom of 4 to 6 individual ramekins or small bowls and cover ...
