Just Be On Your Mat

Image
photo: shaletann Yoga teaches you how to listen to your body. ~ Mariel Hemingway I have a friend whos been chronicling her first 100-day foray into the Land of Raw Foods on YouTube. Its been a joy to witness the very visible physical and emotional transformation in her as shes fully engaged in a 100% raw, living foods diet. Her public sharing has been a source of inspiration to many whove watched her shed forty excess pounds and emerge a vibrant and vital young woman. Long about Day 75 a troll showed up in the comments: "Stop fooling everyone into thinking you eat only raw foods. Youre too fat and youre giving the whole raw foods movement a bad name..." Mr. Troll (read: toe jam, ignoramus, jerk) had much more to say before he was forcibly vaporized from cyberspace, but not before my own hackles went up. You see, I know that berating voice of the troll all too well – its taken up residence in my own head longer than I care to admit. For years, I had a desire to do yoga. But I ...

Summer Means Salads with Fresh Herbs and Things Im Thinking About on Tuesday 7 8 14

Image
This Middle Eastern Tomato Salad is a sure sign it's summer! It's definitely summer weather at my house, and I couldn't be happier about it.  And although I'm still trying to figure out how to create a garden like I had at my old house, I do have an abundance of fresh herbs growing in those pots along the sidewalk that I mentioned about a month ago.  I started with six pots, but quickly decided I needed more basil, so now I have 4 pots of basil, and one each of mint, parsley, rosemary, and dill all thriving in the sun.  (They're in one of the few places here that gets bright sun all day long, so I need to remember to go out at dusk and take some photos!) There's also sage, French tarragon, thyme, Greek oregano, and more parsley growing in a little strip of dirt on other edge of the sidewalk, so I'm doing pretty well in the fresh herb department. I've also been been to the farmers market three times, which is helping a little with the garden envy.  (If y...

Thoughts on Supplements

Image
I get asked about supplements a lot. In fact, I just gave a presentation about it last weekend. My take home message from that talk, which I would like to share with you, is this:  “In the sports world, where millions of products with special ingredients are marketed with claims of enhanced performance, it is ironic that sports foods containing an everyday nutrient (carbohydrate) may be best able to deliver on these claims.”  -British Journal of Sports Medicine There are so many products that promise everything, literally! However, the best thing you can do (and most delicious!) is to make sure you are meeting your energy demands, or calorie, by eating enough carbohydrate. That is the fuel your body really needs. Consider adding sport drinks, gels, or other food products that are rich in carbohydrate to supplement your training and leave the other stuff alone. I think you will be happy with the results! Sailing With Nutritionist Keri Glassman On A Mind Body Spirit Cruise My Opinion Of Her High ORAC O2 DIet

Image
Keri Glassman Nationally recognized nutritionist and author Follow Foods For Long Life on FACEBOOK ! Learning About Nutrition on a Cruise? On Tuesday, I wrote about many of my favorite experiences on the  Mind, Body, & Spirit Cruise  that we recently took. Besides all the great activities like Zumba, yoga, ballroom dancing, stretching and massage, there were some very good lecturers, the best of whom was Keri Glassman. Since I am a nutritionist, its not a surprise that I would enjoy the lectures about nutrition the most. But I must say, it takes a lot of guts to stand up in front of a bunch of people vacationing on a cruise and discuss nutrition! (Pardon me miss Glassman, could you speed up the lecture as its interfering with the ice cream social on the Lido deck!). Much to the credit of the passengers, the seats were filled and people were truly interested in learning more about nutrition. Much to her credit, she encouraged people to listen, enjoy the cruise and prac...

Zumba On The High Seas With Diane Hedrick The Highlight Of My 10 Day Mind Body Spirit Cruise On The Crystal Symphony

Image
Morning Zumba on the deck with Cabo San Lucas in the background Follow Foods For Long Life on FACEBOOK ! Another Healthy Vacation Last year I posted How to take a healthy cruise and have fun without the weight gain. Feeling pretty confident that I could do this again, Doug and I jumped at the chance when we got a great deal on a 10 day "Mind, Body & Spirit" cruise to the Mexican Riviera on the Crystal Symphony. But besides just focusing on the healthy food options, this time I focused on the full agenda of healthy lectures and activities.  Cruises and other types of "all inclusive" vacations can be dangerous if you slip into the mode of trying to "eat and drink your moneys worth". But try to remember that the lovely memory of that last chocolate dessert fades long before the fat it put on your thighs! There are always wonderful food choices to make, especially on cruises where they bend over backwards to please you.  Lots of wonderful ingredients for a...

New Fasted Cardio Study Falsifies the Myth of Superior Long Term 4 Week Fat Loss on a Moderate Energy Deficit

Image
If we go by the convincing results of the study at hand, the fasted cardio myth is obviously busted. Sometimes the day youve been waiting for comes faster than youd thought... no, I am not talking about a teens eighteens birthday or Christmas (reminds me, I still have to buy a ton of presents), but rather of the recently hinted at "fasted cardio study" by Brad Jon Schoenfeld, Alan Albert Aragon, Colin D Wilborn, James W Krieger and Gul T Sonmez. The study of which I wrote only 2 days ago in my article about the 50% increase in fatty acid oxidation in fasted vs. fed morning cardio (learn more). And it is in fact the study which may finally solve the "Is fasted cardio good for your weight loss?"-question. In contrast to the previously discussed paper, Schoenfeld et al. who started with the common hypothesis that "performing aerobic exercise after an overnight fast accelerates the loss of body fat" (Schoenfeld. 2014), did not content themselves with measures ...

How To Make A Virgin Cosmo Ways To Avoid A Hangover On New Years Eve

Image
Virgin Cosmo Are You Celebrating the End of 2010 or Just Glad That Its Over? There are many years when we feel blessed and look back with joy over the many happy events that transpired. And then there are times when we end the year feeling as though we were run over by a freight train and are just happy to see it end.  In either case, whether we are joyous or trying to drown our sorrows, tradition has us breaking out the hooch. The beginning of a year should bring us new goals and hope for the future. We need to feel our best and start the year grounded and inspired. Unfortunately, many a new year’s celebration leaves us crawling out of the bed the next morning wondering how we are going to get through the day, no less the next year. I’m not saying to skip that New Year’s Eve party. I’d just like to share some tips on how to have a good time and not regret it in the morning. Feeling good about yourself Whenever I drink a glass of club soda or some faux alcoholic concoction, I ...

Dr Michael Greger Gives An Update On Latest Nutritional Research In Santa Rosa

Image
World Renowned Nutritional Expert or Stand-up Comic? On Saturday I was fortunate enough to attend a lecture in Santa Rosa by Dr. Michael Greger. He was the guest speaker at a gathering of the Farm Animal Protection Project , a volunteer organization that works to prevent animal suffering. Besides being informative, this guy had me laughing from the minute he started until his last slide. He reminds me of Jon Cryer who plays Alan, Charlie Sheens brother in two and a half men. He uses this "quiz show" format to present his material and I certainly did not expect a lecture in clinical nutrition to be this entertaining. If you ever get a chance to listen to him speak, take it. You can also buy his DVDs on the " Latest in Clinical Nutrition " on his website. Michael Greger, M.D. Among his long list of credentials, you may have heard of him as the expert witness in defense of Oprah Winfrey at the infamous "meat defamation" trial. Dr. Greger is the Director of P...
