Adapting Slow Cooker Meals for Your Family

Image
We are officially Back to School---it started Monday. Ive mentioned before that I am a meal planner, and the fall brings out a plethora of good intentions to eat wholesome family meals together each night, and share highlights of the day. This year was no different. I had my menu planned out, and a shopping list ready to go. But. This year Im pregnant (baby girl #3!), and I have a new kindergartner . Which means that instead of going to the store while both girls were in school, I disinfected the blinds (thats totally normal... right?) and instead of going right after kindergarten let out, we both fell asleep on the couch during Arthur. I may have even drooled a bit. And all of a sudden it was time to get my third grader who had " so much homework, mom ," and the store couldnt happen. So I made do. This is a variation of the Autumn Sausage Casserole that I made last year, but made with ingredients I had in the house. Other than the spices, the ingredients were all different....

Just Be On Your Mat

photo: shaletann Yoga teaches you how to listen to your body. ~ Mariel Hemingway I have a friend whos been chronicling her first 100-day foray into the Land of Raw Foods on YouTube. Its been a joy to witness the very visible physical and emotional transformation in her as shes fully engaged in a 100% raw, living foods diet. Her public sharing has been a source of inspiration to many whove watched her shed forty excess pounds and emerge a vibrant and vital young woman. Long about Day 75 a troll showed up in the comments: "Stop fooling everyone into thinking you eat only raw foods. Youre too fat and youre giving the whole raw foods movement a bad name..." Mr. Troll (read: toe jam, ignoramus, jerk) had much more to say before he was forcibly vaporized from cyberspace, but not before my own hackles went up. You see, I know that berating voice of the troll all too well – its taken up residence in my own head longer than I care to admit. For years, I had a desire to do yoga. But I ...

How to get balanced meal in your diet

Image
Menu planning: start with vegetables and fruits When you think about your future meal menus, integrate systematically: The equivalent of a fruit at breakfast: fresh fruit or fruit juice with no added sugar. A vegetable with two main meals: lunch AND dinner. Every day at lunch and / or dinner: a minimum rawness. Every day at lunch and / or dinner: a fruit dessert or other dessert containing fruits, at least. In a way, it would reverse our process. We reason most often from protein (meat, fish, eggs): "Tonight we eat chicken," and thus we neglect the vegetables. It would be best to start with the choice of vegetables: "Tonight, we eat carrots" and then think about coaching in order to get a balanced meal. Frequent purchases of fruits and vegetables on the market The first rule is to buy fruits and vegetables in season. Thus, they are fresh, cheaper and locally sourced. The second rule is to focus on market purchases. Ideally at least twice a week to avoid long store v...

Whats Your Body Telling You

Image
Im still processing and digesting the wealth of information I received from participating in Kevin Giannis remarkable Rawkathon event. Listening to interviews with 14 world-renowned health experts in seven days is a lot to absorb. One of the folks who particularly resonated with me was raw food coach Karen Knowler from the UK. She spoke about what it means to truly live a healthy balanced life, how to safely transition to a raw foods diet, and put an end to emotional eating. Karens energy and enthusiasm is contagious and by the time she was through speaking, I was vibrating. This will often happen to me when I hear Truth. Ever have that experience, where deep inside you feel an inner "Yes!" after you hear or read something? Ironically, Karen shared a story on the Rawkathon about a time when her own body informed her that she had just made a very important decision. As a follow-up, Karen has written a wonderful article that further illustrates her increased perception and in...

8 Tips to get the Most out of Your TDM Practice

Image
1. Come hydrated and fill up your water bottle before class. It’s good for your muscles... and it sucks if you have to miss part of barre stretch to go get water! 2. Find the spot in the room that will set you up for success. If you’re newer to class try to be upfront or near the mirror so can use it to self correct. If you’re hard of hearing then place yourself closer to the speaker. If you’re sensitive to loud music move away from the speaker. Also important - if you have a chatty friend in class separate yourselves so you won’t distract each other! 3. Get there early. There is nothing worse than being rushed. By getting there a few minutes early you will have the time to transition from mom or work mode into workout mode. It also gives you a better opportunity to get your favorite spot in the room. 4. Set an intention for the class. What is it that you want to get out of class today? Maybe you are sore and really want to focus deeply on the stretches or you need some stress rele...

Talk to Your Family About Diabetes and Healthy Vision

The subject of diabetes seems to be everywhere these days—in the news, on social media, even on talk shows. In fact, 26 million people have diabetes, and this number is increasing, putting more people at risk for health complications. If you or someone in your family has diabetes, you should talk to them about diabetic eye disease, one of the complications of diabetes. Diabetic eye disease includes cataract, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, which is the most common form of the disease. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in adults 20–74 years of age. More than 800,000 African Americans have diabetic retinopathy, and this number will likely reach 1.2 million by 2030. While everyone who has diabetes can get diabetic eye disease, African Americans are at higher risk of losing vision or going blind from it. “The longer a person has diabetes, the greater is his or her risk of developing diabetic eye disease,” said Paul A. Sieving, M.D., Ph.D., director of...

Whats Really Behind Your Food Cravings

Image
Ive written before about Changing My Relationship With Food and how the process was key in my recovering from morbid obesity. One of the things I discovered along the way was that food cravings are physical . Physical cravings are our cells crying for the nutrients they need. Sadly, we often respond to this urge by eating highly processed and refined foods which only promote further malnourishment. Yup, that was me. Tipping the scales at over 300 pounds, yet starving. I used to think the four food groups were Starbucks, chocolate, cheeseburgers and French fries. While I was transitioning from the Standard American Diet of packaged and processed foods to a diet high in raw, living foods, I went through some periods of strong cravings. {To get a sense of what my transition looked like, you can read A Day In The Life} Early on, my body craved wild-caught Alaskan salmon daily. After several months of detoxifying my system of food additives and preservatives, I couldnt get enough beets. Mor...

Its Eat Your Bean Day

Image
Today, July 3rd, is national eat bean day, so why not celebrate it by adding some beans to your diet. Beans (a legume) are a great source of protein, fiber, minerals and some B vitamins. They are low in fat and cholesterol. Here is the nutrition information for 0.5 cup cooked beans made from dried beans (taken from "Dietitians Online"):   Although beans do not make a complete protein, when you add them to a grain (example: rice and beans, couscous and lentils, barley and chick peas, etc.) they become a full protein. These combinations can help vegetarians and vegans, that dont eat meat, eggs and/or dairy, to meet their protein needs. Beans have been shown to help with lowering cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Moreover, they can reduce risk for heart disease, some cancers, diabetes and bone disease (osteoporosis). Since beans are packed with fiber, they help you feel fuller longer as well as help your bowels move and prevent constipation. There are multiple vitam...

Water In Your Body

Image
I talk a lot about hydration on this blog. I thought it would be a good idea to talk about everything water does for us in our body, besides just cooling us off through sweat. Proper hydration is important to perform best at your sport, but it does so much more! Water helps control our internal body temperature through sweating. Athletes know all about that!  It is the water in our blood that carries nutrients (glucose, oxygen, and fats) to the muscles and also removes the by-products from metabolism. The waste products are rid from our body through urine. Darker urine means that the waste is more concentrated. Being properly hydrated will reduce the stress on the kidneys and liver, whose job it is to remove waste from the body. Water also lubricates our joints and provides cushion to our organs.  Drinking enough water will also help prevent  constipation .  So as you can see, water has many roles in our body. As an athlete, you are at a greater risk for dehydra...

You Can Lose Weight Without Dieting Though Your Bod Is Probably Pretty Great As It Is

Image
Is it possible to get healthy or lose weight without dieting? We’re firmly in the pro-healthy-living but anti-diet camp over here, so if there’s a way to drop unhealthy extra pounds (stress on unhealthy — your bod is probably pretty great as it is) or get healthy without resorting to diets, I’m all ears. The word “diet” has been getting a bad reputation the past few years, and for good reason: Research shows that crash diets, generally defined as eating under 1200 calories a day, are not successful in the long run, and in fact may be detrimental to your health. So how to get healthy? Huge changes to an unhealthy lifestyle can be a daunting prospect, making it difficult to start losing excess weight. Fortunately, Quartz reports that new research from the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University shows that even just one small lifestyle change can trigger a chain reaction of sorts — small changes lead to small amounts of weight loss, which leads to other small changes, with an overall eff...

High Fructose Consumption Inflammation Up LDL HDL Ratio Down Is That Good or Bad For Your Heart

Image
Remember: If anything fructose from beverages (including juices), yet not fructose from whole fruit is a problem. In fact eating whole fruits will decrease your blood lipids and high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) inflammation markers. Fructose is bad for you, right? Right. According to the latest study from the University of Newcastle , the consumption of only one drink containing containing 50 g of either fructose or glucose or sucrose dissolved in water will have detrimental effects on the #1 indicator of whole body inflammation, which is high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Much to the researchers surprise, though, the same amount of fructose had significant beneficial effects on the plasma lipid levels of the healthy male and female adults (n = 14) between the ages of 18-60 years who were recruited by advertisement and underwent study procedures at the Nutraceuticals Research Group Clinic rooms at the University of Newcastle in Australia. Apples Top The List For Most PesticidesDirty Dozen And Clean Fifteen For 2014Are There Pesticides In Your Babys Food

Image
Once again apples top the list as having the most pesticide residue in EWGs annual "Dirty Dozen" list. Follow Foods For Long Life on Facebook and Pinterest. Thanks EWG For the last ten years, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has taken data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture on pesticide residue and compiled a list of the most and least contaminated fruits and vegetables. I use this list to determine which produce should be purchased as organic and which conventionally grown produce is safe to eat. For example, I always buy organic apples, which often top the "Dirty Dozen" list and I rarely spend the extra money for avocados that top the "Clean Fifteen." The Dirty Dozen Plus The Dirty Dozen contain high concentrations of pesticides as well as a number of different pesticides. For example: * Every sample of imported nectarines and 99% of apple samples had pesticide residue. * Potatoes had more pesticides by weight than any other food. * A single ...

How Your Cellphone Can Help You Lose Weight

Image
You Facetime your BFF to make plans for Friday night, you receive a text alert from your bank when your account balance nosedives, and you Snapchat silly faces to your siblings. For most people, a cellphone is an integral part of nearly every aspect of life, from waking up in the morning to scheduling appointments. So it was only a matter of time before it got involved in managing your waistline. Mobile weight-loss interventions, such as text-message reminders, can help people lose significantly more weight than they would without cellphone support, according to a new study presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions.
