Supplements Can Lessen Depression in Nursing Homes

Depression is a common condition in our society as a whole. There are however certain segments of our population that are more likely to suffer from depression than others. In todays blog, Ill highlight a recent study that indicates that a simple nutritional-supplement may help to lessen depressive symptoms in older people living in nursing homes. But, as is often the case, we may be able to apply these findings to other segments of society that arent in residential homes as well. Whats the scoop on this study? Its estimated that about one-third of nursing home residents suffer from depression. This not only impacts their quality-of-life but it likely affects their overall health status. There is some evidence that indicates that certain nutrients (like vitamin C, selenium and folic acid) may play a role in depressive symptoms in other age-groups. So, the researchers of this study set out to find if supplementing with these three nutrients could help to improve the mood of these dep...

Thoughts on Supplements

I get asked about supplements a lot. In fact, I just gave a presentation about it last weekend. My take home message from that talk, which I would like to share with you, is this:  “In the sports world, where millions of products with special ingredients are marketed with claims of enhanced performance, it is ironic that sports foods containing an everyday nutrient (carbohydrate) may be best able to deliver on these claims.”  -British Journal of Sports Medicine There are so many products that promise everything, literally! However, the best thing you can do (and most delicious!) is to make sure you are meeting your energy demands, or calorie, by eating enough carbohydrate. That is the fuel your body really needs. Consider adding sport drinks, gels, or other food products that are rich in carbohydrate to supplement your training and leave the other stuff alone. I think you will be happy with the results! In view of the fact that all the feedback I got in response to the re-installment of the Short News was positive, I guess you wont mind if I use the chance and bundle the two soon-to-be-published weight loss studies from the British Journal of Nutrition into a Weight Loss Supplement Mini-Special of the SuppVersity Short News . If you were actually sitting next to you, I would probably ask you, whether youd prefer the good, or the bad news, first!? Well, I guess Ill start with the bad one, then: Green tea sucked - again! ZERO effect of EGCG supplementation in overweight women To examine the effects of green tea epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on the changes in body composition (! not just weight), energy and substrate metabolism, cardiometabolic risk factors and liver function enzymes after an energy-restricted diet intervention in obese women, a group of researchers from the University of the Basque Countr...

Weight Loss Supplements 4 Easy Tips to get YOU Drinking More Water

We all know water is good for us.  It helps maintain weight, it’s great for our skin, and it’s great for pretty much every organ in our bodies.  Sometimes though it is so hard to get enough of the good ol’ H2O! You need to aim to consume half your body weight in ounces, so if you weigh 130 pounds you should aim to drink about 65 ounces a day, which can be rough.  Try these tips to help you guzzle more of the good stuff every day!   1. Buy that cute water bottle or straw cup you have been eyeing. If you have water with you, you will drink more.  I keep a water bottle in my purse, currently I love the Contigo straw bottles, and I also pack a straw cup as well.  I usually leave my Starbuck’s straw cup in my car and drink as I run errands.  If I am going to the mall I put my trusty cup in the cup holder of my stroller and aim to finish it before I finish my shopping.  It’s fast and easy to just drink as we walk around.   Keeping the wat...
