A Gluten Free or other allergen free! Thanksgiving

Image
A few weeks ago, my friend Diane at The W.H.O.L.E. (whole healthy organic living everyday) Gang had the brilliant idea to host a Gluten Free Progressive Dinner, with Thanksgiving as the theme. Im pleased to be a stop on the journey, with my Corn Bread Slow Cooker Stuffing. Its absolutely delicious, and I look forward to bringing it along to my moms house on the 26 th for our family Thanksgiving dinner. I dont write too much about gluten free stuff, because I try really hard not to let this allergy change the way we eat. I feel as if we eat a balanced diet full of lots of food and grains, we just happen to steer clear from wheat, barley, rye, and oats (unless they are certified gluten free), and read labels meticulously. Although going gluten free hasnt been too much of a strain on our own day-to-day family eating, it is hard to plan for large gatherings where other people are preparing the food, and when the food is store-bought. Most store-bought prepared party food is off-limits, an...

A Feast For The Eyes A Glass of Emerald

Sometimes, looking is enough.   And, sometimes, you just have to give in to temptation. Friday Food Porn One of my latest haunts on the web is a relatively new site called Golubka. Its a mother-daughter collaboration covering good food, clever design, and some things in between. The "in between" would be photographs – lots of them – that make me want to jump up off my chair and dive right into the computer screen. Case in point: this gorgeous glass of greeeeeeeen smoothie. Twenty-month-old Paloma drinks them twice a day. { Id like to gnaw on Palomas sweet cheeks twice a day. Such a cutie! } Paloma likes lots of her mamas sexy raw vegan recipes. I betcha you will too once you get a taste. Live a little. Its the weekend.

Is a Belly Bad

Image
A protruding midsection can mean many different things. It can be obesity, starvation/kwashiorkor or sarcopenia. It can mean there is a layer of fat outside, sagging organs poorly supported by weak abdominal muscles or fat surrounding the organs and stretching the muscles outward. Alternatively having the same “lean” profile at 60 as at 16 could be a sign of a decline of muscle and an increase in fat surrounding organs. You can always have a porthole put in to see what is going on, or you can check the calendar and your C-reactive protein level. If you are over fifty and your doctor has told you that your CRP, a measure of inflammation, is starting to creep up, then you are starting to suffer from age-related loss of muscle, sarcopenia. That is, you have begun to replace your muscle mass with fat, and the fat is producing inflammatory signal molecules, cytokines, that are the same as those produced by your immune system cells in response to an infection. Most of the symptoms we ass...

Sailing With Nutritionist Keri Glassman On A Mind Body Spirit Cruise My Opinion Of Her High ORAC O2 DIet

Image
Keri Glassman Nationally recognized nutritionist and author Follow Foods For Long Life on FACEBOOK ! Learning About Nutrition on a Cruise? On Tuesday, I wrote about many of my favorite experiences on the  Mind, Body, & Spirit Cruise  that we recently took. Besides all the great activities like Zumba, yoga, ballroom dancing, stretching and massage, there were some very good lecturers, the best of whom was Keri Glassman. Since I am a nutritionist, its not a surprise that I would enjoy the lectures about nutrition the most. But I must say, it takes a lot of guts to stand up in front of a bunch of people vacationing on a cruise and discuss nutrition! (Pardon me miss Glassman, could you speed up the lecture as its interfering with the ice cream social on the Lido deck!). Much to the credit of the passengers, the seats were filled and people were truly interested in learning more about nutrition. Much to her credit, she encouraged people to listen, enjoy the cruise and prac...
