Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma Symptoms and Life Expectancy

There are three major types of cells responsible for Malignant Mesothelioma. Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is the most lethal of them. 10-15% of all mesothelioma are diagnosed as Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma. Diagnosis of  sarcomatoid mesothelioma is difficult as compared to other types of  mesothelioma due to its similarity with benign tissue cells. Is often misdiagnosed as some other diseases like fibrous pleurisy, fibrosarcoma, and metastasized renal cell carcinoma.

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma


Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the outer lining of various important organs of human body. Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma cells are elongated and spindle-shaped. They are arranged in a haphazard way. Sarcomatoid cells dont have a nucleus. In most of the cases of sarcomatoid mesothelioma, its found to affect lungs, abdomen or heart. If we categorize Malignant Mesothelioma according to the organs that it affect then there are four types:
  • Pleural Mesothelioma
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma
  • Pericardial mesothelioma
  • Mesothelioma of the Tunica Vaginalis
All of these can be caused by sarcomatoid cells.

Subtypes of Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma


Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma can be further categorized into three types according to behaviour, size and shape of sarcomatoid cells. These types are

1 ) Transitional Mesothelioma


Its caused by standard sarcomatoid cell types. These cells are plump and spindle shaped.

2) Lymphohistiocytoid Mesothelioma


Sarcomatoid cells in this type of Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma are in large amount of inflammatory and immune cells. These cells are Large and spindle-shaped. 1% of all mesotheliomas are this type of mesothelioma. 

3) Desmoplastic Mesothelioma


This type of Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose as it is patternless. These cells are Long and found in collagen bundles. 5% of all mesothelioma cases are Desmoplastic Mesothelioma.

  • weight loss
  • weakness
  • shortness of breath 

Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma with sarcomatoid cell types


  • anorexia
  • nausea
  • pain of the abdomen


Misdiagnoses of Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma


Sometimes Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is misdiagnosed as diseases listed below. So if are suffering from any of these diseases and not responding to the treatment then you should diagnose yourself  for Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma. These diseases are:

  • Pleural liposarcoma
  • Fibrous pleurisy
  • Fibrosarcoma
  • Malignant fibrous histiocytoma
  • Localized fibrous tumors
  • Metastasized renal cell carcinoma

Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma Life Expectancy


Life Expectancy in Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma depends on which subtype of Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma you are suffering from and in which stage the patient is. Only the doctor working the case history can provide some insight about life expectancy. But you cant set a countdown timer according to the time limit told by you doctor as its just an approximate life expectancy and actual time may differ.
